In this article, we will explore some of the new features and enhancements of CAMWorks 2020 SP0 x64 in more detail.

Probe Cycles

One of the most significant additions to CAMWorks 2020 SP0 x64 is the support for probe cycles. Probing is a process of measuring various features on a part using a touch probe mounted on the machine spindle. Probing can help you verify the accuracy and quality of your machining process, as well as perform various tasks such as setting work offsets, aligning parts and inspecting dimensions.

In CAMWorks 2020 SP0 x64, you can define various types of probe cycles using the Probe tab of the Operation Parameters dialog box. These include:

  • Probing a single face: This cycle measures the distance between the probe tip and a planar face on the part. You can use this cycle to set work offsets or check the flatness of a face.

  • Probing a web: This cycle measures the width and height of a web feature on the part. You can use this cycle to check the size and position of a web.

  • Probing a pocket: This cycle measures the width, length and depth of a pocket feature on the part. You can use this cycle to check the size and position of a pocket.

  • Probing a boss: This cycle measures the diameter and height of a boss feature on the part. You can use this cycle to check the size and position of a boss.

  • Probing a bore feature (hole): This cycle measures the diameter and depth of a bore feature (hole) on the part. You can use this cycle to check the size and position of a hole.

  • Probing a boss feature or bore feature through 3 points: This cycle measures the diameter and depth of a boss feature or bore feature (hole) on the part by probing three points on its surface. You can use this cycle to measure features that are not perpendicular to the machine axes or have irregular shapes.

CAMWorks 2020 SP0 x64 also provides options for defining probe tool parameters, such as probe diameter, length and tip radius, as well as probe motion parameters, such as feedrate, clearance plane and approach/retract distance. You can also specify how to output the probe results, such as displaying them on the machine controller or saving them to a file.

CAMWorks 2020 SP0 x64 supports probing for both milling and turning operations. You can insert probe cycles before or after any machining operation in your CAMWorks operation tree. You can also simulate and post-process your probe cycles along with your machining operations.

Multi-Axis Milling Improvements

CAMWorks 2020 SP0 x64 also offers several improvements for multi-axis milling operations, such as swarf cutting, multi-surface feature and curve feature. These improvements include:

  • Better toolpath generation and simulation for swarf cutting operations, which are used to machine thin walls or ribs along their side faces using the side of the tool. CAMWorks 2020 SP0 x64 can handle more complex geometries and avoid collisions with adjacent surfaces.

  • More options for defining multi-surface features, which are used to machine multiple surfaces with different orientations using a single operation. CAMWorks 2020 SP0 x64 allows you to select surfaces by color, filter surfaces by angle range or normal direction, and exclude small surfaces from machining.

  • More options for defining curve features, which are used to machine along curves or edges using a single operation. CAMWorks 2020 SP0 x64 allows you to select curves by color, filter curves by angle range or normal direction, and exclude small curves from machining.

CAMWorks 2020 SP0 x64 also provides more control over your multi-axis toolpaths, such as adjusting tool tilt angles, smoothing toolpath transitions, optimizing toolpath segments and applying gouge checking and avoidance.

Turning Enhancements

CAMWorks 2020 SP0 x64 also introduces some enhancements for turning operations, such as:

  • Support for multiple roughing passes for turning operations, which can help you remove large amounts of material more efficiently and extend tool life. You can specify the number of roughing passes, the depth of cut for each pass, and whether to use constant or variable depth of cut.
